Student nurses to protest in travel row
Student nurses at two of Dublin's main hospitals are planning lunchtime protests today to demand the immediate payment of overdue travel allowances.
The Irish Nurses Organisation said Beaumont and St James's Hospitals had promised to make the payments once they received funding from the Department of Health.
It said some of this funding was recently secured, but the money had still not been paid and the hospitals had given no indication when it would be forthcoming.
The INO said some nurses haven't received travel allowances in three years, which was frustrating given the problems many hospitals are having in retaining skilled nurses.
Spokesperson Phil Ni Seaghdha said: "If the Irish health service really wants to retain student nurses into the future, then this is one way you do not go about it."
