Carlow sugar factory to close
11/03/2005 - 11:17:30The 80-year-old Carlow sugar factory is due to close this afternoon with the loss of 190 full-time and 130 seasonal jobs.
The closure was announced in January with the factory's owners, Greencore, blaming impending EU reforms that will involve cuts in subsidies and quotas.
Greencore is now concentrating all its sugar production in Mallow, Co Cork - the last of the original four sugar factories that once provided thousands of Irish people with direct and indirect employment.
