In this controversial French drama we meet one of the screen's most dysfunctional families, on holiday and getting up to all manner of things which would give the neighbours back home a touch of the vapours.
Son Pierre (Garrel) joins his parents for a beach break and, since dad decides to do his own thing, discovers that mum (Huppert) is a bit of a goer, a walker on the wild side, a party animal … and a lot more besides.
It's your usual tale of French cinematic sexual intrigue and there's an element of out-to-shock about the film … in which it succeeds, not always with good taste.
The film does look good, to be sure, but there is a coldness at its heart … which mother tries to kiss better.
