Robson hails the Campbell effect

10/03/2005 - 12:52:46
Bryan Robson has hailed the impact made by striker Kevin Campbell since his arrival at West Brom from Everton during the January transfer window.

Campbell has scored three goals in six Barclays Premiership appearances for the Baggies and he has quickly been installed as captain by Robson, who recognises his leadership qualities.

Robson told PA Sport: “Kevin’s character not just on the football pitch, but also around the training ground, is excellent.

“We all knew he had the capabilities and experience as a player to do a good job for us in the fight to stay in the Premiership.

“But the way he gets on with players and his banter has also been excellent from the moment he walked through the door to join us in January.

“That is important for a captain to show good character away from the football side and get on well with the players.”

Robson believes that Campbell and midfielder Kieran Richardson, who is on loan from Manchester United until the end of the season, have made a telling impact in the bid to stay in the top flight.

He said: “I think Campbell and Richardson have made a bit of a difference. Richardson’s pace and energy and quality on the ball has been very good.

“He has been a goal threat and Kevin’s experience and the way he leads the line is a good example to everybody. That is why we have maybe had a bit of an improvement.”

Meanwhile, Robson is hoping that Chelsea’s thoughts will not be fully on next Tuesday’s clash with Albion given their runaway lead in the Premiership and having booked a place in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

He said: “Chelsea are still in the Champions League their minds could actually be on that. For me they have more or less won the league. They have only lost once all season and are not going to lose four games from now to the end of the season.

“You hope that maybe they will go in with that approach of having us next, having a nice cushion and even if they don’t beat us they still have a nice cushion.”
