Opposition to keep up pressure for Martin resignation

10/03/2005 - 07:49:55
Opposition parties are expected to reiterate their calls for the resignation of Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin when the Dáil debates the Travers Report later today.

The report into the levying of nursing home charges on medical card holders criticised successive governments for failing to end the illegal practice, which was in place from 1976 to late last year.

However, it blamed the matter on widespread corporate failures in the management of the Department of Health and found that Mr Martin had not been briefed about the situation when he was minister at the department.

The department's general secretary, Michael Kelly, has been moved to the position of chairman of the Higher Education Authority in response to the report.

However, Fine Gael, the Labour Party and the Greens have all accused the Government of using Mr Kelly as a scapegoat.
