Trials find new drug can reduce risk of second heart attack
10/03/2005 - 07:18:24Medical trials have found that a new drug can significantly reduce the risk of recovering heart attack patients suffering a second attack.
The study into the use of the drug Plavix was carried out at hospitals in 23 countries, including five in Ireland.
It found that the blood-thinning drug reduces the risk of a second heart attack by 31%, when combined with current treatments.
More than 21,000 people suffer heart attacks in Ireland every year and the country has one of the highest death rates from the condition in the world.
