Inflation falls slightly despite end-of-sales price rises

10/03/2005 - 12:18:23
Ireland’s inflation rate fell slightly last month, despite an overall increase in prices, according to figures published today by the Central Statistics Office.

The CSO said average prices increased by 0.8% in February, but because a similar increase was recorded in the same month last year, the annual inflation rate actually fell to 2.2%.

The jump in prices is largely due to the ending of the annual January sales.

The CSO said the most notable price increase over the past 12 months was a 9.4% rise in the cost of housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels.

Education costs have also jumped by 6.3% over the past year, while health costs rose by 5.9%, transport costs by 2.8% and the prices charged by restaurants and hotels were up 3.3%.
