Betsen may join Leicester Tigers

France flanker Serge Betsen could be on the verge of signing for English club Leicester after admitting holding talks with the Zurich Premiership leaders about a possible move in the summer.

The back-row forward’s contract at Biarritz runs out at the end of the season and he has revealed that a switch to Welford Road would interest him.

Having spent all his career at Biarritz, the 30-year-old admitted he was ready for a new challenge and added that the Tigers had already offered him a two-year deal.

“Yes, I am interested in playing in England,” revealed Betsen, capped 47 times by his country.

“A few days ago I went to Leicester, it is true. My contract with Biarritz is over in June and Leicester are ready for a two-year contract.

“The way Leicester play is attractive. When you are a competitor you want to work with the best. I am always attracted by perfection.”

Betsen is a regular fixture in Les Bleus’ pack and is well known for his dynamic running, his fearsome tackling and his ability to slow down and steal opposition ball.

His back-row combination with Olivier Magne and Imanol Harinordoquy was key in bringing France the Grand Slam in last year’s RBS 6 Nations and he plays a totemic role for Biarritz, who are always among the favourites for the Heineken Cup.

If Betsen does complete a switch to Leicester, he would link up with England internationals Lewis Moody and Martin Corry in what would be a fearsome back row.

It could also signal the end of the playing career of former England and Lions star Neil Back, who is already part of the coaching set-up at Welford Road.

Betsen believes a move to the Tigers will provide him with a completely different test as he embarks on a new stage in his career.

“When you are 30, you ask yourself some questions about the future,” he added. “I have played in Biarritz for 15 years. BO (Biarrtitz Olympique) is my life but I would like to discover new ways of training and a new way of thinking rugby.

“It is just an hour and a half by plane from Biarritz to London. It is close! I will announce my decision soon.”
