McDowell condemns IRA offer to shoot murder suspects

09/03/2005 - 12:05:09
Justice Minister Michael McDowell has condemned the Provisional IRA's offer to shoot four people it believes were responsible for the murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney.

The IRA said last night that it had offered to shoot the four men, including two of its own members, but this was rejected by the dead man's sisters and fiancee, who wanted the suspects tried in the courts.

Responding to the statement, Mr McDowell said it was outrageous.

"They are strutting around nationalist enclaves in Northern Ireland pretending to exercise a spurious legitimacy that somehow they administer justice in their community," he said.

"It is an outrageous attack on the civil liberties of every single person on every part of this island."
