Irish wages 134% of European average: SFA survey

Wages in Ireland are now 134% of the European average, according to the Small Firms Association's Annual Pay Survey.

Wage increases across the economy grew by 5.4% last year, though in small companies the average was 8%, the SFA study found. Across Europe, wages grew by 2.2% last year.

According to the survey:

- 34% of employee grades earn up to €25,000
- 42% earn between €25,000-€35,000
- 15% earn between €35,000-€45,000
- 9% earn more than €45,000
- 34% have bonus schemes
- 17% pay maternity benefit above Social Welfare
- Average mileage allowance is 59 cents per mile

The twelfth annual SFA pay and conditions survey shows that the typical employee of a small firm earns between €25,000 and €35,000 per annum, works between 37.5 and 39 hours per week, has 21 days holidays per year, has an 80% chance of being part of a company sick pay scheme and 63% chance of being in a company pension scheme.

The largest wage increases last year were in the QA engineer category, where salaries rose 20%, followed by telesales and sales supervisors at 14% each.
