Monaco ruler Rainier hospitalised

08/03/2005 - 11:50:04
Monaco’s 82-year-old ruler Prince Rainier has been admitted to a hospital with a chest infection and was expected to require a few days of treatment, the royal household said today.

Rainier, who has been in and out of hospital in past months, was admitted yesterday to a heart and chest clinic due to a “bronchial-pulmonary infection”, a statement said.

Father of three Rainier, whose film star wife, Grace Kelly, died in a car crash in 1982, has a history of heart problems and has suffered from poor health in recent years.

He spent a week at the same Monaco hospital last October, where he was treated for a chest infection.

He was also admitted to the clinic in February 2004 for a coronary lesion and a damaged blood vessel, and spent three weeks there the month before for what was described as general fatigue.

Monaco, a tiny principality famous for its casinos, Formula One Grand Prix and tax breaks that attract the rich and famous, is nestled on the Mediterranean Coast between Italy and the French Riviera.
