Minister praises McCartney family

08/03/2005 - 14:52:42
The sisters and partner of murdered Belfast man Robert McCartney have shown the extraordinary power that women’s voices can have in standing up against wrongdoing, it was claimed today.

Justice Minister Michael McDowell met Mr McCartney’s sisters and partner at Government Buildings as part of International Womens’ Day.

Mr McDowell praised the bravery of Paula, Catherine, Gemma, Donna, Clare and Mr McCartney’s partner Bridgeen Hagans and said he was humbled to meet them.

Mr McCartney was stabbed and kicked to death after a pub brawl in Belfast city centre.

Three members of the IRA were expelled following the killing and seven members of Sinn Féin suspended while it is investigated.

Mr McDowell said International Women’s Day was an opportunity to prioritise the equality agenda in Irish life.
