Limerick group pioneers leukaemia research

A €2m investment from Irish and European funding agencies in research at the University of Limerick has yielded the possibility of an advanced system for the early and diagnosis of cancer in children, it was revealed today.

The first medical application of the new diagnostic system by the Stokes Research Institute is likely to be in the area of childhood leukaemia.

The Institute has linked with cancer specialists at Barts Hospital in London and with Professor Rajnish Gupta at the Oncology Department of Limerick Regional Hospital to advance the research.

The Stokes Research Institute is an EU research training centre under the auspices of the Marie Curie Foundation.
