Canada hit by earthquake
06/03/2005 - 12:25:46A moderate earthquake shook Quebec, Canada, early today, jolting some people awake. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damages, authorities said.
The epicentre of the 5.4-magnitude quake was near Riviere-du-Loup, 250 miles northeast of Montreal, according to Sylvia Hayek of the Department of Natural Resources.
The quake, in the early hours of this morning, was felt in Montreal and Boston, 375 miles south of the epicentre, and the federal capital of Ottawa, 310 miles west of Riviere-du-Loup, near the St Lawrence River.
Hayek said quakes are common in Quebec’s Charlevoix area, but most are too small to be felt.
