Westmeath edge past Donegal
Westmeath 1-12 Donegal 1-11
A crowd of 5,325 spectators at Cusack Park watched Westmeath edge Donegal 1-12 to 1-11 with Dessie Dolan pocketing a goal and four points.
The sides were deadlocked at 1-06 apiece after a titanic first-half battle - in which Westmeath goalkeeper Gary Connaughton saved a Ryan Bradley spot kick.
Alan Mangan and Dolan opened the home side's account, but they trailed 0-03 to 1-02 after 17 minutes thanks to Colm McFadden's goal from a Stephen McDermott set-up.
Just on the half-hour, Dolan ran through to net following good work by Michael Ennis and Mangan for a 1-05-all scoreline. McFadden and Joe Fallon pointed in the closing stages as the side went tit-for-tat.
Westmeath's James Davitt and Ray Sweeney of Donegal were both yellow-carded in the first-half - and four followed in a scrappy second half.
A critical run of four straight points on the hour mark from substitute Denis Glennon, Fallon (0-02) and Paddy Mulvihill ensured victory for the Leinster champions.
