Norman pulls out in Dubai
Greg Norman withdrew from the Dubai Desert Classic before his second round today after suffering a recurrence of back trouble.
The former world number one, who last month celebrated his 50th birthday, was in pain during his opening 74 and then went into spasm while preparing to tee off again.
Norman went to see a European tour physiotherapist and the decision to pull out was taken. He hopes to recover in time for the Players’ Championship in Florida starting on March 24.
Manager Bart Collins said: “Greg has had back issues for quite a few years. He tweaked it on the 11th hole of his first round, but had every intention of playing today. He went through about 60 shots on the range, but had some numbness and then couldn’t even turn.”
Norman is scheduled to play a mixture of regular tour events and seniors golf this summer, including the British Seniors Open at Royal Aberdeen the week after the Open at St Andrews.
