Keegan urged to set out stall

04/03/2005 - 09:40:31
Manchester City boss Kevin Keegan has been urged to tell his players if he plans to leave the club in the summer.

The former England coach’s contract expires at the end of next season and he has maintained he will leave Eastlands then.

However, goalkeeper David James admits to being alarmed at reports claiming Keegan is ready to stand down at the end of this campaign.

James told BBC GMR: “The gaffer now is doing a lot of good stuff. I think it is showing in performances – we are much more consistent. It would be nice to know that something is going to happen or when it is going to happen more so than anything.

“The gaffer said he is going to see his contract out, which is 18 months, and there is a lot of speculation that it is going to be at the end of the season. It is going to be the end of the season then tell us.”

James is anxious for a clear statement of intent from his manager, who signed the England keeper from West Ham for £2m (€2.9m) in last season’s transfer window.

“What we are doing as a team with the manager is good, “ he said.

“But what is going to happen next year or the year after we don’t know. Is there going to be someone else in? When are they going to be in and are they going to be as good as the gaffer is now?

“Those are the sort of questions that arise but you don’t want to be asking those sort of questions. You prefer some sort of clarity, then you know where you are going and have your goals set.”
