Doherty made to wait

04/03/2005 - 08:12:56
Norwich defender Gary Doherty will be made to wait to learn whether he is part of Nigel Worthington’s squad to face Chelsea tomorrow.

The Republic of Ireland international was not in the 16 for Monday’s home defeat to Manchester City because Worthington felt other players offered him more options.

The 25-year-old wants to concentrate on being a defender after being utilised as a striker in the past, and his manager insists that counted against him when he picked his squad to face City.

“He wasn’t on the substitutes’ bench on Monday because Simon Charlton can play at centre-half or left-back and Gary Doherty can only play centre-half,” said Worthington.

“He doesn’t want to play as a striker so there is no point putting someone on the bench when they can’t play another role.

“I decided to leave him out because I felt there were mistakes being made. They were not all down to Gary but I felt a change was required.”

Worthington may decide to stick with 21-year-old Jason Shackell at the centre of defence.

Meanwhile, Adam Drury is expected to stay in the side to face Jose Mourinho’s men after a proficient display against Shaun Wright-Phillips.

“I thought Adam (Drury) had an excellent game against the Wright-Phillips, who is quick and lively,” added Worthington. Adam is younger than Simon (Charlton) and has got the fresher legs.

“Charlie has got the experience and is getting a bit older but it was the pace thing that decided that one. Adam will play again on Saturday.”

Darren Huckerby is a doubt for City with the calf injury which ruled him out of the Manchester City match.

Mattias Jonson is suspended while Mathias Svensson, David Bentley and Ryan Jarvis are all still sidelined with knee injuries.
