Schumacher expecting tough test in 2005
Michael Schumacher does not expect to run away with an eighth world championship when the new Formula One season begins in Australia this weekend.
The German has won the last five world championships for Ferrari but their decision to start the year with last season’s car means he expects difficulties early on.
Schumacher still tips himself to be among the front-runners but revealed Ferrari’s old car is likely to prevent him repeating his easy 2004 win.
He said: “We will be reasonably competitive but not completely up front – it is hard to predict. We will be running closely in the front but I can’t say who will be running where.”
Schumacher spent Thursday enjoying the Melbourne sunshine after a chilly end to testing in Europe.
Snow and freezing temperatures marked the final test of the pre-season in Valencia and Schumacher was pleased to swap that environment for the sunnier climes of Australia.
He added: “Those guys who were at the last test in Valencia would be disappointed because there was so much snow it was undriveable. The circumstances weren’t there to have a positive test.”
Despite expecting a tougher than usual start to the new season, Schumacher is still happy with life at Ferrari after a decade with the Italian team.
He made his Ferrari debut in Melbourne 10 years ago but despite admitting frequent conversations with McLaren boss Ron Dennis about a move away, Schumacher has no regrets about staying put.
“There was an approach from Ron,” he said. “Obviously it didn’t work out because I was pretty happy where I was.
“I think it’s pretty natural. We have had loads of discussion over the years and so it was in 2000 – and it wasn’t only in 2000.
“But you build up very strong relationships and I can only say we have a fantastic harmony and relationships within the team that have developed over the years.”
