Senior republican denies involvement in McCartney murder

03/03/2005 - 07:48:53
The alleged senior republican accused of involvement in the murder of Belfast man Robert McCartney has denied responsibility in a newspaper interview this morning.

Gerard Davidson told the Daily Ireland newspaper that he was not involved in the assault that led to Mr McCartney's death and had not ordered anyone to attack the 33-year-old.

Mr Davidson and his associates have been accused of killing Mr McCartney following an altercation inside a pub in Belfast on January 30.

However, Mr Davidson said today that he suffered multiple wounds from a broken glass during the altercation and was in hospital when Mr McCartney was beaten and stabbed to death a short time later.

He said he never saw Mr McCartney after being taken to hospital and denied ordering his associates to attack the man.

Mr Davidson was arrested for questioning about the killing the following day, but he was released without charge.

In this morning's interview, he called on witnesses to come forward and said nobody should be intimidated into not giving evidence.
