Golfing great's grandson dies in hot tub

The 17-month-old grandson of golf multi-millionaire Jack Nicklaus died after falling into a hot tub at the family’s Florida home last night.

Jake Walter Nicklaus had been playing in the hot tub with his four-year-old brother and their nanny, said Palm Beach County sheriff’s spokesman Paul Miller.

The three left the pool area and went into the house, but Jake slipped away and went back through a sliding door to the hot tub, Miller said.

The nanny quickly realised he was missing and discovered him in the water, Miller said.

She performed CPR until rescue workers arrived. The boy was breathing at the time, he said. He was taken to the hospital and died about 90 minutes after rescuers were called.

According to the preliminary investigation, the death appeared to be accidental, Miller said.

He said there was a child barrier around the entire pool area.

Jake is the son of Steve Nicklaus, one of Jack Nicklaus’s four sons.

A winner of 18 majors and five-time winner of the PGA Player of the Year, Nicklaus is regarded by many as the greatest golfer of all time. His son Steve has collaborated with him on several golf course designs.
