Rovers release ex-skipper Palmer

02/03/2005 - 16:40:43
Former Shamrock Rovers captain Terry Palmer has been told he is no longer wanted by the Hoops after seven seasons at the club.

32-year-old Palmer, a lifelong Rovers’ supporter, shook hands with manager Roddy Collins on an agreement to remain with Rovers at the end of last season though no deal was signed as the defender needed to undergo a groin operation.

However, Collins informed Palmer on Tuesday that he would not be offered a contract.

Palmer said: “I am very disappointed with what has happened. Roddy told me on Tuesday night that I was only going to be fourth choice centre half next season and that the money wasn’t there to keep me.

“Yet money is available to sign new players. I am very disappointed because I gave seven seasons to the club. I was always very loyal to them, I could have moved to other clubs but I didn’t because I loved Rovers.”

A number of eircom League and Irish League clubs sounded out Palmer regarding his availability when his contract with Rovers expired and, having initially turned down all their advances, he is hoping that those clubs are still interested as he looks for a new club for the 2005 season.
