Monty supports Faldo appointment

02/03/2005 - 14:21:05
Ryder Cup hero Colin Montgomerie has backed today’s decision appoint Nick Faldo as Europe’s captain for Kentucky in 2008.

Ian Woosnam will lead the holders next year at the K Club in Ireland but Faldo will take over when the event moves back to the United States.

Montgomerie, who sunk the winning putt in last year’s victory at Oakland Hills, insists Woosnam is the correct choice to take over from Bernhard Langer but believes Faldo’s appointment will put an end to speculation about the captaincy over the next three years.

Faldo, who won the Masters three times and is the Ryder Cup’s record points scorer, was believed to have a better chance of captaining in 2008 because of his experience of playing in America.

“It was the right thing to do, Ian Woosnam’s time was right, he’s been a superb vice-captain to Sam Torrance in 2002 and his time is now,” Montgomerie told Sky Sports News.

“Nick was always a special case, Europe’s most successful player and had to have the captaincy at least once. It was only right that we picked both of them, we didn’t want Nick to feel left out in any way, shape or form.

“It was the right decision and hopefully it will be taken that way.

“It’s a very positive step for us and now, for three and a half years, there’s no talk about Ryder Cup captaincy, and that’s the right thing to do. We took a decision, went with it, and all believe it is the right thing to do.”
