Abuse victims may bypass redress board

02/03/2005 - 08:45:11
Hundreds of abuse victims are reportedly set to bypass the State’s redress scheme following a High Court decision to award €370,000 to a man abused at a Kilkenny industrial school.

Reports this morning said the size of the award was expected to prompt victims to take court action in pursuit of compensation rather than opt for a hearing before the Residential Institutions Redress Board.

The reports said the average award currently being made by the board was €77,000.

The Government set up the board to decide on compensation for people who were abused in State-run institutions like industrial schools in an effort to prevent costly legal cases.
