Elan shares plummet after drug withdrawal

Shares in Elan have plummeted today as the company withdrew a drug used to treat multiple sclerosis.

The company withdrew the drug Tysabri after it was linked to a death of a person who took a combination therapy which includes the drug.

Elan employs over 400 people at its biotechnology plant in Athlone, Co Westmeath.

The company, which has lost nearly 75% of its value on the stock market following suspension of the drug, is to meet with its investors later today.
