Mullane the hero for Waterford

Waterford staved off a potential upset as John Mullane bagged 1-03 in their eight-point defeat of a gallant Laois side.
James Young - who notched 0-07 in all - inspired the Leinster side into an early lead in Portlaoise, but 2003 All-Star Mullane hit his three points to see the injury-hit Deise assume a lead they were determined not to relinquish.
Dave Bennett and midfielder Brian Phelan helped them back on terms before Mullane hit his goal and inspired the visitors to score 1-05 in a matter of six minutes.
Brian Wall, Dan Shanahan and Eoin Kelly (0-02) struck in the closing stages of the first half for a 1-10 to 0-07 buffer.
The Munster men - who lost substitute Eoin McGrath early on to a yellow card, for a late tackle on James Tynan - powered clear in the second half with Bennett and Kelly proving a constant threat in sight of the posts.
