Garda investigator inspects Hariri assassination scene

The Garda chief probing the assassination of Rafik Hariri inspected the Beirut seafront road where the former Lebanese prime minister’s motorcade was blown up on February 14.

Peter Fitzgerald, Ireland’s deputy garda commissioner and the head of the United Nations investigation team, spent half an hour at the bombing site, inspecting the huge crater punched in the street by the blast that hit Hariri’s motorcade, also killing another 16 people.

The assassination of its most prominent politician plunged Lebanon into its worst political crisis in years, sparking anti-government and anti-Syrian protests and outrage by the international community, which demanded an investigation and called anew on Syria to withdraw its army from Lebanon.
