Souness persists with Shearer campaign

Newcastle boss Graeme Souness has admitted he has used emotional blackmail in an attempt to persuade skipper Alan Shearer not to retire.

The 34-year-old striker, who collected his 14th goal of the season in last Thursday night’s 2-1 UEFA Cup win in Heerenveen, shows no sign of rethinking his decision to call it a day at the end of the current campaign, but the Scot is yet to give up his attempts to get him to play on.

“I want him here no matter what happens next year,” he said as he prepared for tonight’s return leg against the Dutch side. “I hope he is here.

“I talk to him all the time about what is happening at the club and I have told him what I want from him, what I expect from him and how much I want him here next year.

“He is a lover of this football club. This is his football club and I have played on his emotions a bit by saying: ‘The best thing for Newcastle United if you really love this club – if you really love this club – the best thing for Newcastle United would be for you to stay next year.'

“I am trying to get to him, but he is an old fox and he has heard it all before.”
