Govt planning new law to ban mobile phones while driving

The Government is reportedly preparing new legislation to outlaw the use of mobile phones while driving.

Reports this morning said the legislation could also outlaw the use of certain hands-free kits if their use involves a major distraction for motorists.

At present, a motorist using a mobile phone while driving can only be prosecuted if he or she is also driving carelessly.

A previous Government attempt to outlaw the use of phones while driving failed four years ago after a botched set of regulations were scrapped on legal advice.
