Govt planning new law to ban mobile phones while driving
24/02/2005 - 08:24:51The Government is reportedly preparing new legislation to outlaw the use of mobile phones while driving.
Reports this morning said the legislation could also outlaw the use of certain hands-free kits if their use involves a major distraction for motorists.
At present, a motorist using a mobile phone while driving can only be prosecuted if he or she is also driving carelessly.
A previous Government attempt to outlaw the use of phones while driving failed four years ago after a botched set of regulations were scrapped on legal advice.
