ESB monopoly ends

The ESB’s virtual monopoly in the Irish electricity market formally ends today.

From midnight last night, power supply in the Irish market has fully opened to competition. All users of electricity can now buy power from any licensed supplier.

This is expected to drive down costs to the consumer and force suppliers to be more competitive.

Protection measures for consumers are also being introduced with the opening of the market.
