Envoy to oversee Irish part in Tsunami relief

16/02/2005 - 18:08:10
A special Government envoy for the Tsunami disaster is to depart tomorrow on his first visit to the devastated south Asian region.

Former Minister of State Chris Flood is to report on the status of the recovery effort and on the use of Government funds allocated in response to the natural disaster.

Mr Flood will present bi-monthly reports on progress over the next six months to both Minister for Foreign Affairs, Dermot Ahern, and Minister of State for Development Cooperation and Human Rights, Conor Lenihan.

The new envoy, who will be accompanied by a specialist from Development Cooperation Ireland to provide additional technical assistance on his trip to Sri Lanka and Indonesia, said he was relishing the trip.

“I am looking forward to my first visit to the region and to seeing at first hand the impact of the disaster and meeting those who have been working so tirelessly to respond to the needs of the people,” Mr Flood said.

“I look forward to hearing reports from the UN, EU, the Irish agencies and of course our own Development Cooperation Ireland personnel.”
