British group buys Farran Technology

British defence group Smiths has strengthened its detection activities through the acquisition of Irish firm Farran Technology for up to €24m.

Farran has technology that can pinpoint the presence on a person of metallic, ceramic and other materials, including plastic explosives.

Farran Technology, founded 25 years ago is based in Ballincollig in Co Cork.

Farran were part of the recent Irish trade mission to China where it signed a multi-million euro contract with Shanghai Spaceflight Institute to develop an imaging system for Chinese radar satellites.
