Hariri dead on arrival at hospital after car bomb

14/02/2005 - 13:38:13
The American University Hospital said Former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri was dead when he arrived at hospital after the massive bomb explosion that ravaged his motorcade on Beirut’s famed seafront corniche today.

His body had been mutilated by the massive explosion.

Hariri’s own Future TV broadcast citations from the Koran, the Islamic holy book.

Syrian President Bashar Assad called the attack “a horrible criminal act”.

Hariri moved toward the opposition camp after leaving office in October – in large part because of a dispute concerning Syria’s controversial role in Lebanon.

He had rejected a Syrian-backed insistence that a rival politician, President Emile Lahoud, remain in office as president for a longer period.

The United States has strongly also criticised Syria’s interference in the country.
