USI to distribute 25,000 sexual health packs
Over 25,000 sexual health packs will be handed out at college campuses across the country in a bid to cut down on the high numbers contracting sexually transmitted diseases, it was confirmed today.
The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) said the aim of the Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance campaign was to encourage students to take a more responsible attitude to these vital issues.
“It is 20 years since contraception became available in Ireland and while great strides have been made since then in raising awareness of sexual health it is clear that there is much work still to be done,” Layne Aston, USI welfare officer, said.
“Recent studies have shown that Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) continue to rise, which clearly indicates that the principles of safe sex are not getting through to the people who need the information most.”
The USI packs which will include a condom, lubricant and literature from the Crisis Pregnancy Agency and Durex.
Ms Aston said it was apparent that people were engaging in sexual activity at a lower age, however, many students were arriving at college with little or no prior guidance in relation to sexual health.
