London Ikea reopens after chaos
The flagship Ikea superstore in London which experienced chaotic scenes when thousands of bargain hunters descended on the outlet, reopened its doors tonight.
Several people were hurt and others suffered heat exhaustion in the chaos which ensued after the furniture store in Edmonton, north London, launched at midnight yesterday.
The company had expected 2,000 customers, but about 6,000 turned up, attracted by the prospect of huge discounts.
An Ikea spokesman said the store reopened at 5pm today, following consultations with the police, fire service and the environmental services department of the local council, but the promotional officers had been withdrawn.
The Ikea spokesman added that following the events of Wednesday night the company had set up a counselling service for its workers.
It has also increased the number of security staff inside and outside the store.
