Press council legislation to be brought before Cabinet soon

Justice Minister Michael McDowell is reportedly planning to bring legislation before the Cabinet in the coming weeks to pave the way for the establishment of a press council.

Mr McDowell has been promising to set up such a body for some time to act as a media watchdog and to investigate complaints against newspapers and broadcasters.

The move, which is expected to include reform of the libel laws, has been sparked in particular by growing concern about media intrusion into the private lives of individual citizens.
