School siege ends in gunman's death
10/02/2005 - 12:20:39A gunman took a 10-year-old boy hostage and wounded a teacher in a South African school today before being shot dead by police.
The incident took place at Monte Video Primary School in Montana, near Cape Town.
Police Captain William Reid said officers shot and killed a man who taken a hostage. He said only that a situation occurred where the life of a child was threatened.
A teacher said the gunman had been at the school since early morning. When approached, he said he was waiting for a specific teacher.
Details of what happened next were sketchy. Witnesses said the gunman took a pupil hostage and shot a teacher. An injured teacher was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
