Gunman holds schoolboy hostage
10/02/2005 - 11:10:35A gunman shot and injured a teacher and took a 10-year-old boy hostage at a primary school in South Africa today.
The man waited at Monte Video Primary School in Montana, near Cape Town, from about 7am (5am Irish time), said a teacher.
When approached, the man said he was waiting for a specific teacher.
Details of what happened next were sketchy. An injured teacher was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was listed in stable condition.
The gunman took a pupil hostage, while hundreds of others were evacuated to safety, witnesses said.
Police snipers took up position at the scene, and negotiations were in progress with the gunman.
