Public 'owed millions in overpaid tax': Fine Gael

10/02/2005 - 10:27:17
Tens of thousands of people are owed millions in overpaid taxes, it was claimed today.

A national information campaign is being launched by Fine Gael to help the public get back money owed since 2001 from the Revenue Commissioners.

Deputy party leader and finance spokesman Richard Bruton believes that many people may not be aware of changes in the law and could lose out.

He said: “The Government has collected millions of euros in excess tax for the past four years."

Since the laws changed on January 1, taxpayers can only claim back tax overpaid in the previous four years, compared to the old timescale of 10 years.

The Revenue cannot now pay out overpaid tax owed for the years prior to the 2000-2001 tax year.

Mr Bruton said: “I want the Government and the Revenue Commissioners to pursue the return of overpaid taxes with the same vigour that it pursues those who have underpaid their taxes.”
