IMC recommends sanctions on SF

10/02/2005 - 12:10:56
The Independent Monitoring Commission has recommended the imposition of political and financial sanctions against Sinn Féin because of the IRA's involvement in the Northern Bank raid.

In a report published today, the body backed the PSNI's assertion that the Provisional IRA was behind the £26.5m (€38.6m) heist, as well as other robberies over the past year, including the theft of £2m (€2.9m) worth of cigarettes in October.

The IMC, which was set up to oversee paramilitary ceasefires, said all these robberies were authorised by the IRA leadership, which, it said, includes senior members of Sinn Féin.

The commission said Sinn Féin had considerable influence over the IRA and must, therefore, bear its share of responsibility for republican criminality.

It said the party could not be said to be committed to non-violence, had its own definition of criminality and had not sufficiently discharged its responsibility to prevent illegal IRA actions.
