Govt says IMC report confirms need for end to IRA activity
The Government has said the latest findings of the Independent Monitoring Commission confirm the need for a complete end to all IRA activity.
In a report published today, the body set up to monitor paramilitary ceasefires said the Provisional IRA was involved in December's £26.5m (€38m) bank heist in Belfast, as well as a number of other robberies in the past year.
It said all these robberies were sanctioned by the IRA leadership, including senior members of Sinn Féin.
In a short statement responding to the report, the Government said this concurred with intelligence assessments it had received in relation to the raids.
The statement said the IMC report underlined "the clear need for the issue of IRA paramilitarism, including all forms of criminal activity, to be resolved satisfactorily for once and for all".
