Diamond Brits for glittering Stone

09/02/2005 - 23:15:02
Teenage sensation Joss Stone was crowned Queen of pop at the Brit Awards tonight.

The 17-year-old from Devon, hailed in some quarters as the new Aretha Franklin, beat Jamelia and Natasha Bedingfield to the coveted title of best British female.

She was also a surprise choice for best urban act, winning out over the likes of The Streets and Dizzee Rascal.

Stone won the prestigious award for Best British Female solo artist over Amy Winehouse, Jamelia, Natasha Bedingfield and PJ Harvey.

She said: “I don’t know what to say. I don’t like doing this at all. I’d like to thank my family for being really supportive and everybody that made my record with me.”

The giggling teenager said; “I don’t even know what to do right now. Thank you all you guys for voting for me, I feel sick right now.”

Stone, who began her musical journey at the age of 13 on a BBC talent show, looked shocked when her name was announced by musician Jazzie B.

Rival nominees Dizzee Rascal, Jamelia, Lemar and The Streets were thought to have a better chance of taking the award than the middle-class kid from Devon.

Stone, who won success in the US before Britain, said: “This is crazy.”
