Wright-Phillips to start for England

08/02/2005 - 12:17:29
Sven-Goran Eriksson today confirmed Shaun Wright-Phillips will start on the right in tomorrow’s friendly against Holland.

It had been suggested the exciting Manchester City winger may have to start on the left with captain David Beckham occupying his usual right midfield berth.

However, it seems Wright-Phillips will make his first start for his country in a front three, to the right of Michael Owen and Wayne Rooney, with Beckham on the right side of a midfield three.

“I am not going to put Shaun Wright-Phillips to the left,” Eriksson told Sky Sports News.

“I think this afternoon you will see practice and will understand at once.

“Shaun Wright-Phillips will start on the right.”

The England coach, whose team selection has been undermined by injuries to his defenders, also confirmed Jamie Carragher and Wes Brown will start the game at Villa Park in central defence.

“It’s a blow that four or five central defenders are away because of injuries,” he said.

“On the other hand it’s good for Carragher and Brown to show what they can do at this level. That’s positive.”

When asked if they will start the game, he added: “I could tell you, yes”.

Eriksson also confirmed Stewart Downing and Andrew Johnson will take part in the game.
