Trócaire campaign to focus on drought-stricken Ethiopia
08/02/2005 - 12:37:54This year's annual Lenten Trócaire campaign will focus on the African nation of Ethiopia, where a famine claimed half a million lives 20 years ago.
The Irish aid agency has warned that drought will leave an estimated seven million Ethiopians needing food aid this year.
Speaking at the launch of this year's Lenten campaign, Archbishop Berhaneyesus of Addis Ababa said the same number of people who died in the Asian tsunami lose their lives in Ethiopia every six months.
Trócaire said it raised almost €12m in last year's campaign and was hoping to match or surpass that figure this year.
