Tories undermining peace process, says leader of House of Commons
Leader of Britain's Conservative Party Michael Howard and his party were accused today of “continuously sniping away and undermining” the peace process in the North.
“It is very important that the peace process is kept on track,” Leader of the House of Commons Peter Hain he told MPs at questions on future business.
“I hope the Conservative front bench, for once under this current leadership, will actually back the government in seeking to get it back on track instead of continuously sniping away and undermining the peace process.”
The process was thrown into crisis last night when the IRA announced its withdrawal from its offer to decommission all of its weapons in return for a settlement.
The move came after the Irish and British blamed the IRA for carrying out the £26.5m (€38m) bank raid on the Northern Bank in Belfast, a claim rejected by the IRA.
