Ambush kills 12 Iraqi army soldiers
03/02/2005 - 08:31:41Gunmen ambushed Iraqi security forces in northern Iraq, killing 12 Iraqi army soldiers, an officer said today.
The Iraqi troops were returning to the northern city of Kirkuk, where they guard oil facilities. Armed men ambushed them yesterday near the village of Zab, 40 miles southwest of the city, said Maj Gen Anwar Mohammed Amin.
The ambush was the deadliest single attack since Sunday’s general elections. Insurgents frequently target members of the US-trained Iraqi security forces, whom they consider collaborators with foreign occupiers.
