Girl, three, drowns in stream

The family of a three-year-old girl who drowned after wandering away from her Monaghan home was tonight being comforted by friends and relatives.

Gardaí launched a search after family members reported the girl and her five-year-old cousin missing from their house.

The girl, who turned three last month, was found shortly before 2pm face down in the disused Old Ulster Canal near a wooded area in Knockroe, Clones Road in Monaghan town.

A garda spokesman said: “The cousin was found safe and well and 10-minutes later she was found in a stream near a wooded area.

“She was taken to hospital.”

However, gardaí said efforts at resuscitation failed.
