Edu staying put
Arsene Wenger has revealed midfielder Edu is set to stay at Arsenal until the end of this season as his proposed move to Valencia has broken down.
Arsenal were seeking a transfer fee of about £1.5m (€2.2m) for the Brazilian international, who is out of contract at the end of this season.
But Valencia were unwilling to pay so much for a player they could yet sign on a free transfer this summer.
Barring a late development before the transfer window shuts at midnight tonight, the midfielder is therefore set to stay put at Highbury.
Wenger reported that, despite a previous threat not to play Edu if he did not sign a new deal with Arsenal, he will consider the Brazilian over the coming months.
“I had a conversation with Edu on Saturday when I understood that he might not leave,” revealed Wenger.
“He told me that if he has to stay – because nobody really came in for him at the level we expected – he would be completely committed.
“Once a player says that to me – and knowing Edu as I do – I have no doubts about that.”
Asked if he still expects Edu to leave in the summer when his contract expires, Wenger admitted: “I didn’t ask whether he had signed for someone already.”
