Doherty progresses in Malta Cup

31/01/2005 - 22:04:14
Ken Doherty, the 1997 world champion, made the last 16 of the Malta Cup tonight after completing a 5-2 victory over Welshman Ryan Day.

The key frame was the fifth in which Day missed several chances to pot the pink for a 3-2 lead before Doherty knocked it in and added the black.

Meanwhile Peter Ebdon made an impressive start to his Malta Cup campaign by completing a quickfire win over Michael Holt at the Hilton Conference Centre in Portomaso tonight.

Ebdon, the 2002 world champion, is renowned as one of the circuit’s more methodical competitors but wrapped up a 5-1 victory in less than two hours.

“I missed a couple of balls but Michael didn’t play as well as he can,” said Ebdon, who defends his Irish Masters title next month.
