Ombudsman seeks constitutional amendment on children’s rights
31/01/2005 - 08:12:28The Ombudsman for Children is seeking a constitutional amendment to specifically protect the rights of the child.
The demand is contained in a submission to the Oireachtas committee on the constitution which was published today by the Ombudsman, Emily Logan.
At present, children's rights are not enshrined in the Constitution, which instead grants rights to the family unit based on marriage.
Ms Logan said this had made it difficult to intervene in families where children have been abused and also created difficulties in certain adoption cases.
